DMMMSU NAVIGATE

DMMMSU NAVIGATE: A Campus Wayfinding Mobile Application for the South La Union Campus

Where It All Started

The inspiration for DMMMSU NAVIGATE came from a problem many of us experienced firsthand getting lost on campus. As the South La Union Campus continues to grow, so does the number of students, visitors, and activities spread across its wide area. New students, in particular, often struggle to find their classrooms, offices, or even the right buildings. We saw how this simple problem was affecting people’s daily routines wasting time, creating stress, and making the campus experience harder than it needed to be. That’s when our team thought: what if we could turn this everyday challenge into something innovative? That idea eventually became DMMMSU NAVIGATE a mobile application designed to help users find their way around campus with ease. Our goal was simple: to make navigation faster, clearer, and more accessible for everyone, especially freshmen, transferees, and guests attending events or doing official transactions.

Prototyping

To build the app, we followed a prototyping approach starting from the ground up. Before anything was designed or coded, we needed to collect accurate data from across the campus. I was assigned to gather information from the College of Agriculture and the College of Fisheries. This meant identifying the names and locations of buildings, listing departments, mapping offices, and even taking photos of key areas and structures. These real-life images and location references became the foundation for the app’s interface. They made the user experience more authentic and relatable. We also carefully designed the app's features to include a simple search tool, building info, and visual cues that could guide users around the campus easily. The goal during prototyping was not just functionality, but also usability and my work contributed to that by ensuring the data was complete, correct, and clear.

Software Testing

After creating the initial version of the app, it was time to test. While the more technical members of our team handled code and bug fixing, I played a supportive role that was just as important. I helped organize the documents and materials we needed like printed data sheets, maps, and building directories and made sure that everything we collected from different departments was accurately reflected in the app. I also reviewed how the information appeared and flagged anything that seemed off. During user testing, we gathered feedback from classmates and test users, which helped us improve the layout and fix any incorrect building names or missing details. This phase really showed me how important it is to double-check even the smallest parts, because those are what make a system reliable.

Ethical Guidelines and Considerations

We took all necessary steps to ensure that our data collection followed proper ethical standards. Before gathering photos or information, we prepared formal letters requesting permission from each department, which had to be signed by designated campus authorities. I was in charge of assisting with this tracking which letters needed approval, following up with offices, and coordinating with our thesis adviser to make sure everything was cleared. We made sure not to include any personal or sensitive data in the system, and all content used in the app came from publicly accessible and authorized sources. By staying transparent and respectful throughout the process, we made sure our work aligned with school policies and data privacy norms.

Conclusion

Working on DMMMSU NAVIGATE taught me that there’s so much value in the behind-the-scenes work. While I wasn’t coding or building the app directly, my contributions researching literature, printing documents, collecting data, organizing content, and securing approvals all played a vital role in bringing the project to life. I realized that every task, no matter how small it may seem, helps build something bigger. What we created isn’t just a school project; it’s a practical solution that helps the whole campus community. DMMMSU NAVIGATE is a reflection of teamwork, initiative, and the shared goal of making the campus more welcoming and easier to explore. I’m proud to have played a part in it.
